Today I´m going to write about the nature of the artist.
The one that lives on top of the line that delimits society.
He lives inevitably in it, but at the same time acquires certain distance to be apart.
He then becomes an observer and speculates and theorizes, being at the same time submerged in the praxis, the daily life.
How does the artist gain this perspective, a view that allows reflection?
Its obvious that theres a feeling of detachment, a void, between the individual and the group.
Theres a highlighted feeling of individuality.
Individuality its created by means of separation and isolation, wether induced or voluntary.
In my case, this no-contact with "the rest" happened at a very early stage of my life, during childhood and teenage and probably it still persists.
The depravation of a social life feels estrange to the teen because his environment in the traditional western family is that of community and union, a feeling of belonging.
The newborn its always looked after his mom giving a feeling of security, and his dad acts as the role model for him to be, creating the strong foundations of a psychologically sane and fully functioning individual.
From the idea of the family to that of the friends, they are then met during childhood in kindergarten, giving way to new forms of relating to other individuals and probably establishing the way we interact with the people that we don't consider our family or we don't identify as such.
Teenage its probably more difficult for the artist, as social life in our society intensifies and we start to mature physically (creating insecurities) and become more autonomous (critical thinking).
It is an age of discoveries...You start thinking about your position in the world, how do you relate to those close to you, what is the value and function of your family in your life, who your friends are, how you relate to you body, how does your body relate to the rest of humans, sex, sexuality...
Some go trough this path as expected, or what it is meant to be socially acceptable. They have many friends, they go out frequently, the have boyfriends (girls), they have girlfriends (boys), they show certain disdain for subjects of study...
Some others find it more difficult. In this case, the artist.
Here I want to highlight that to me, the goal of the artist it is an aesthetic one, the fulfilling of desire.
You my dear reader, might think that the previous statement its gratuitous and not well funded.
But in arrears to keep this simple I will not explain this further, not in this post.
What I am trying to do here, is to demystify the myth of the artist, and try to break down "the process of becoming one". This might sound ridiculous to many, but I do believe there are some ideas in this text that many artists can relate to.
Teenage is a time of physical expansion, of blurring the boundaries of the contained soul in the body. There is one that is sexual, the kiss, the sucking, the penetrating... That attempt to melt into one. It is a time of boundaries-recognition.
There is another one that is spatio-temporal. The autonomy acquired by the creation of new social experiences that require other spaces and time than those required for the family.
The bounding to a place, the topography of your life: the streets you walk trough, the squares you frequently go to, your school, your room...All that becomes your identity, an extension of your body and your life. Something your could call your spatial habits.
Any test of the boundaries requires new spatio-temporal configurations. Again this is an attempt to expand. They expand the horizons of our human existence, the provide us with new perspectives.
The artist grows in the person as soon as trauma happens. Trauma being the happening of subversive events in his/her life.
To put it simple, when events do not happen as expected and fear follows.
Trauma gives to the artist a different experience to what its perceived as normal. When the gay boy kisses the girls and events do not happen as expected, trauma follows.
When the girl enjoys having her hair short, trauma follows, as this is a not an expected behaviour.
Theres always a feeling of discomfort. That of being different.
Namely sexual, cultural, social... Usually they are all interrelated.
It is at this point that the gap, the void, appears. Theres a distinction between the preconceived and reality. We happen to be different, to be alone. To be individual. (Again in the midst of society)
Nevertheless, being different does not mean that the subject will become an artist, as there are far more circumstances that shape individuals than the previously stated. This circumstances give an opportunity for the individual to question and compare the society that he lives in.
It is also a chance to reconsider himself/oneself as a unique example of materialized life. A specimen that questions every single bit of his life, expanding the possibilities of every objects, function, situation...As proved by the non-expected reality.
It is this void that arises the possibility of change, of filling the empty vessel with new ideas and conceptions on family, society, (structures), identity... It is a chance to dream.
An opportunity to transform reality. To implant fiction in our environment and fulfill our expectations, the ones that differ from the norm.
It an opportunity to star afresh. To erase trauma. The re-organize. To restructure.
